Highlights of this event were the following:

Having ALL five students winning 1st Place in Weapons! We are definitely putting up a show with our weapon skills! The kids were excited as well as the parents. This was a great motivator for the next round which was the forms competition.

Teress and the Goju-Ryu girl, Teress was competing against a Goju-Ryu stylist. This Goju-Ryu girl was awesome. I was looking from afar and thought to myself “This girl is GOOD!” Teress was next and she was so determine that she BLEW the competition away! Teress performed a new competition kata that during practice at The Dojo was giving her a hard time. At every training session I kept asking her “Are you sure you want to do this at the tournament?” and every time she would reassure me that she could do it. Well she did it…well done Teress! You were AWESOME!!!

Alaina Spears: Seen this young girl perform is like listening to a great melody from the 3 Tenors…nothing but the very best!

Caevyon Askew: This young fellow fought his heart out! Caevyon got kicked square on the face and landed square on his rear. But he shook it off and kept on going. This was Caevyon’s first time at competing and I must say he did extremely well. Caevyon is for sure a competitor…he likes to be challenge!

Lamont Williams: Lamont is another first timer who won ALL 1st Places on his divisions. He is the typical teenager who shows no excitement.

Treshaun…Treshaun…Treshaun: Let’s pause for a second and let me explain this. Treshaun, Alaina and Teress are all Purple belts in weapons…they are basically just beginners. However, I had them compete with their current “Karate” rank. So Treshaun competed in the weapon’s division as a brown belt. Treshaun was competing against the very best black belts and tied in 1st Place! Well, if that was not dramatic enough it gets better! You know with Treshaun there is ALWAYS drama in the making. Last October Treshaun competed in the fighting division against a young fellow who was a brown belt and Treshaun at the time was only a green belt. Well Treshaun as a green belt went ahead and won 1st Place against the brown belt. That’s what prompted me to promote Treshaun to Brown belt status since he did so well against that young man. Well, guess what? Now these two young fellows meet again! Yes they meet again. Treshaun as a brown belt and the other fellow as a black belt and the fighting got REAL! This young black belt was not going to have a brown belt beat him but Treshaun just kept the heat on him and wore the black belt down. Treshaun got the win AGAIN! I kind of felt bad for the young black belt but Treshaun was in his domain…this kid likes to rumble.

From “The East Coast Karate Challenge” we came out with 10 First Place Trophies. The reason we do so well is because we train hard. But also from the support that these children have from their parents and from The Dojo plays a big role in their success.

Next Tournament: “AAU Regional Championships” Saturday 5/13 in Richmond, VA.
